13 March, 2020. Calgary, AB.
Used as a soundtrack in Creating Genesis Theatre’s production of Salt-Water Moon, showing from March 13-15 at the Motel Theatre, Arts Commons!
Inspired by Salt-Water Moon by David French. Includes new arrangements of the song The Moon Shines Bright on Charlie Chaplin by Kerry Mills.
Never really ‘written’ music for anything, so the chance to do that in the context of this play’s production has been such a treat! I recorded all of the tracks with a Tascam DR-05 Linear PCM Recorder which was double-sided-taped to the wall of my apartment (in which I tried my best to eliminate sound in, by setting up pillows, closing curtains, and cutting the power to the fridge) whilst I replayed recorded memory tracks from my $40 plastic Yamaha keyboard so I wouldn’t get plastic creaks and key hit sounds that I would get if I had recorded live. Finished by editing and adding in reverb with Audacity. You can hear some creaks of my wooden piano bench in the recordings which I like, as they ended up adding some ‘real piano’ authenticity. I would then actually record that on its own to play throughout the play, to suggest a creaking old seaside house that kinda sounds like a pirate ship at sea. Anyways, a real professional process, I’m sure! The result is a fuzzy, overblown, and distant sound to the tracks which I think fits with the play’s starry-night ocean-side setting.
